Today I was available, so I jumped at the opportunity!
Both kids were excited to see me...I was a surprise guest for both...but both had different reactions. Connor was especially sweet, really soaking up the special moments and tugging at my heart the whole time. Lily was more excited, but going on with business as usual in her own way.
The lunches were overlapped a little, but mostly staggered. Connors was first and when he walked in from recess, I was waiting in his classroom for him. Boy was he happy. The smile was big, genuine. There were kids in front of him so he had to patiently wait for them to scatter to their cubbies before he could get to me. He gave a quick hug and grabbed his lunch and water bottle before we lined up. Once in line he leaned into me and I don't think he dropped once until he had to go back to the classroom. Aww.
He munched away at his carrots, granola bar and fruit cup, all the while explaining the lunch process to me. Every so often he told me something about his day or classroom that I hadn't heard before. Soooo nice!
The very best Connor and mom moment was when we were lining up for the lunchroom and got half way there. He looked up and quietly said "mommy? I love this!" The smile oozed happiness and melted my heart.
After Connor headed back to class, I found a spot next to Lily. She saw me with Connor when she walked in and said hello quickly before getting to her table, per the rules. I found she had saved me a seat and sat right down she was situated with one other girl and three boys. Lily had a lunchable in front of her with a full section of Bologna and only half of the crackers and cheese missing. "Momma? What's this (Bologna)? It's Bologna bird. Oh...I don't want that stuff mom." Ha. I wasn't going to stand in the way of that and encouraged her to focus on the cheese and crackers. Lily told me about her friends, doing writers workshop in the outdoor classroom and about how she picks snacks for school at daddy's house. Haha. What a cutie! She leaned in a lot too. We're a snuggly bunch you know.
Each kiddo got a special frosted cookie from the bakery as a treat. Connor even gave me the last quarter of his "just cause I love you, momma!"
I won't be able to do it much, but I'm already looking forward to my next lunch date!!

So weird that we both had "lunch dates" with our kiddos on the same day. Nice that theirs is staggered so you can eat with both. Glad you had slight flexibility in your crazy life/schedule to get to do things like that at times!!! RR
